JPO IP RIGHTS TRAINING COURSE 2026

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) is pleased to announce that the Japan Patent Office (JPO), in partnership with the Japan Institute for Promoting Invention and Innovation (JIPII) and the Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS), is offering a series of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) training courses for FY2026.

These IPR courses are part of the human resource development initiatives under the Memorandum of Cooperation on Intellectual Property between IPOPHL and JPO.

Qualified and interested applicants may obtain the JPO Training Application Form from the Human Resource Management and Development Division (HRMDD) of IPOPHL, located at the 2nd Floor, Intellectual Property Center, 28 Upper McKinley Hill Town Center, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. The application forms may also be downloaded here. Completed applications must be submitted within the deadlines specified for each course. Please note that requests for extension of submission deadlines will not be accommodated. Applicants are likewise advised to carefully review and ensure compliance with the qualification requirements for each course.

A. JPO/IPR Training Course for Practitioners Specializing in Trademarks [Hybrid]

Duration:

  • Online: September 30 – October 13, 2026
  • In-person: October 28 – November 05, 2026
  • Follow-up: February 16-17, 2027
  • Total training hours: 60 hours
  • Application Deadline: June 19, 2026

Objective: To deepen one’s knowledge on intellectual property in general, as well as to deepen one’s understanding of and enhance one’s professional capabilities on trademark practices, by hearing lectures and holding discussions on the trademark system, trademark examination standards of the Madrid System, and the use of trademark information.

Specific Requirement(s) for This Course:

Candidates have to be professionals working in one of the following positions:

  1. Patent/trademark attorneys and IP lawyers in the private sector who are involved in trademark practices;
  2. Employees engaged in trademark practices in the private sector.

General Requirements (Applicants must meet all of the following requirements):

Candidates must:

  1. be nominated by the IP Office in their countries.
  2. be engaged in the field of IPR.
  3. be university graduates and/or have equivalent professional experience.
  4. be physically and mentally prepared to undergo an intensive training course.
  5. be persons who are not full-time students or armed forces personnel.
  6. continue working in the same field after completing the training course.
  7. have adequate English language ability to attend lectures and discussions, as well as make reports.
    * If English ability is considered to be insufficient, an interview will be conducted by telephone to confirm English proficiency.
  8. have considerable knowledge of the IPR system, with more than three years of experience in the field of IPR, in principle.
  9. be under 50 years of age.

In principle, it is preferred that candidates must not have participated in a
JPO/IPR training course during FY2025 or FY2026.

B. JPO/IPR Training Course for Practitioners Specializing in Patents [Hybrid]

Duration:

  • Online: October 05-29, 2026
  • In-person: November 13-20, 2026
  • Total training hours: 72 hours
  • Application Deadline: June 22, 2026

Objective: To enhance one’s knowledge on intellectual property in general. To also deepen one’s understanding and enhance one’s professional capabilities in terms of patent practices such as acquiring knowledge on the outline of the patent system, preparing specifications and drawings, handling office actions, making amendments, judging
patentability, considering patents for innovative technology, using patent information, and handling operations involving licensing.

Specific Requirement(s) for This Course:

Candidates have to be professionals working in one of the following positions:

  1. Patent attorneys, IP lawyers or patent practitioners in the private sector who have experience drafting patent specifications.

General Requirements (Applicants must meet all of the following requirements):

Candidates must:

  1. be nominated by the IP Office in their countries.
  2. be engaged in the field of IPR.
  3. be university graduates and/or have equivalent professional experience.
  4. be physically and mentally prepared to undergo an intensive training course.
  5. be persons who are not full-time students or armed forces personnel.
  6. continue working in the same field after completing the training course.
  7. have adequate English language ability to attend lectures and discussions, as well as make reports.
    * If English ability is considered to be insufficient, an interview will be conducted by telephone to confirm English proficiency.
  8. have considerable knowledge of the IPR system, with more than three years of experience in the field of IPR, in principle.
  9. be under 50 years of age.

C. JPO/IPR Training Course on Academia-Industry Collaboration and Technology Transfer [In-person]

Duration:

  • In Person: December 07-16, 2026
  • Follow-up: February 18-19, 2027 
  • Total training hours: 54 hours
  • Application Deadline: July 24, 2026

Objective:

To deepen one’s knowledge about intellectual property in general, as well as to learn efficient and effective methods for managing IP at universities and other institutions, by hearing lectures and holding discussions on managing intellectual property, university-industry government collaboration, and ways for universities and research institutes to transfer technology to the private sector.

Specific Requirement(s) for This Course:

  1. Employees at universities or research institutions involved in intellectual property management/utilization, such as the promotion of university-industry-government collaboration and technology transfer;
  2. Persons at ministries/government offices in charge of developing technology, and other related organizations who are engaged in advising and supporting IP management/utilization such as promoting university-industry-government collaborations and technology transfers;
  3. Employees of companies who are in charge of intellectual property;
    Officials of IP Offices engaged in work regarding IP management/utilization, such as promotion of industry-academia collaboration, or technology transfer at universities and
    research institutes.

General Requirements (Applicants must meet all of the following requirements):

Candidates must:

  1. be nominated by the IP Office in their countries.
  2. be engaged in the field of IPR.
  3. be university graduates and/or have equivalent professional experience.
  4. be physically and mentally prepared to undergo an intensive training course.

D. JPO/IPR Training Course for IP Trainers [In-Person]

  • In Person: December 08-18, 2026
  • Follow-up: February 24-25, 2027
  • Total training hours: 60 hours
  • Application Deadline: August 20, 2026

Objective:

To deepen the participants’ understanding of required knowledge (e.g. legal systems and international treaties) and methods of education (e.g. textbooks and implementation plans) as well as train suitable educators/instructors through conducting presentations and exchanging opinions on IP rights dissemination activities.

Specific Requirement(s) for This Course:

  • Candidates have to be lecturers / employees at universities or research institutions involved in education related to the intellectual property system.

General Requirements (Applicants must meet all of the following requirements):

Candidates must:

  1. be nominated by the IP Office in their countries.
  2. be engaged in the field of IPR.
  3. be university graduates and/or have equivalent professional experience.
  4. be physically and mentally prepared to undergo an intensive training course.
  5. be persons who are not full-time students or armed forces personnel.
  6. continue working in the same field after completing the training course.
  7. have adequate English language ability to attend lectures and discussions, as well as make reports.

E. JPO/IPR Training Course on Support for Small and Medium Enterprises [In-person]

Duration:

  • January 13-19, 2027
  • Total training hours: 30 hours
  • Application Deadline: September 11, 2026

Objective: To gain knowledge of efficient and effective methods and measures undertaken by governments to promote public awareness of IP rights through presentations and opinion exchanges regarding the IP support activities in Japan for Support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Specific Requirement(s) for This Course:

  1. Officials at IP Offices involved in activities for supporting SMEs with IPR
  2. Professionals in IP promotional organizations engaged in activities to support SMEs with IPR

General Requirements (Applicants must meet all of the following requirements):

Candidates must:

  1. be nominated by the IP Office in their countries.
  2. be engaged in the field of IPR.
  3. be university graduates and/or have equivalent professional experience.
  4. be physically and mentally prepared to undergo an intensive training course.
  5. be persons who are not full-time students or armed forces personnel.
  6. continue working in the same field after completing the training course.
  7. have adequate English language ability to attend lectures and discussions, as well as make reports.

    Important: Part 1 must be signed by the applicant’s company/organization representative (not the applicant). Parts 2–6 must be signed by the applicant. All sections of the form must be completed:

• If an item does not apply, write “N/A”.
• Provide clear contact details including Email, Fax Number, and Telephone Number so organizers can reach you.

2. Personal Photo

• Size: 4 cm x 3 cm, to be attached in Part 2-1 of the application form.
• Photo should show the face clearly, from slightly above the top of the hair to the
middle of the chest.

3. Copy of Applicant’s Passport
If unavailable, submit a copy of an official photo ID card or driver’s license showing the name and address in Romanized characters.
