IPOPHL STRENGTHENS IP KNOWLEDGE OF GAME DEVELOPMENT SECTOR

18 January 2018

A two-day seminar on intellectual property (IP) for game developers was conducted by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) on 16 – 17 January 2018 as part of the Office’s IP education drive. With the aim to provide the sector with working knowledge of IP, participants were introduced to the basic principles of IP, traditional knowledge, and IP enforcement.

In the study released first in 2006 and updated in 2014, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) determined that the copyright-based industries (CBIs) –which include the video game sector— contribute 7.34% to the Philippine Gross Domestic Product. To enhance this, IPOPHL deems it necessary to educate the CBIs so they would be able to benefit from the IP system.

“We plan that for every quarter of 2018 IPOPHL shall touch base with a specific sector that relies on copyright protection and conduct a basic seminar on IP,” said Deputy Director General Nelson P. Laluces during his opening remarks.

Aside from the quarterly seminars, IPOPHL will be conducting weekly seminars for the general public which will cover the basics of patents, trademarks, copyright, utility models, and industrial designs.
