HBO’s ’sigils’ that are driving GoT merch mania

The long summer has gone and Winter is here: every Game of Thrones fan from Dorne to North of the Wall is holding on to their banners for the last season of the highly anticipated HBO series. With millions of fans captured throughout the show’s violent seven seasons, HBO didn’t miss the chance to have its sigils - trademarks - protected and licensed for enough brand partnerships to fill the Seven Kingdoms.

The ‘Game of Thrones’  as a word mark has been applied and registered in a LOT of classes of goods in the US, from the usual mugs and shirts to video games and home accessories - a deft move by HBO who saw the huge fanbase willing to shell out Golden Dragons for any GoT merchandise.

With its worldwide fanbase, HBO had its trademarks registered in different countries, not just the US. In the Philippines, HBO had registered word marks for the great Houses of Westeros, for online merchandise.

With so many classes of goods covered, a world of GOT merchandise and co-branded goods had HBO laughing all the way to the Iron Bank:

1. Alcoholic Beverages

No matter which House your loyalties lie, you’re sure to enjoy the season premiere with a bottle of Dornish red, or better yet, HBO’s official wines. These were made in partnership with Californian wine-maker Bob Cabral, and marketed as the network’s official line of wines, consisting of a Chardonnay and a Red Wine Blend.  Other fans, who were inspired by the description of food and wine in the books have made their own unofficial beverages too.

HBO also partnered with Brewery Ommegang for 14 "Game of Thrones" themed beers, with the latest one, “For the Throne”, scheduled to be released in time for the season opener.

2.  Adidas’ Ultra Boost

We wouldn’t be surprised if the White Walkers were sporting these in the long march to the South. In an inspired move, Adidas collaborated with HBO to release “Game of Thrones” edition of its best-selling Ultra Boost shoes featuring designs of the White Walker, House Lannister, House Targaryen, Night’s Watch,  House Stark designs. These GOT shoes had a local launching last month.
