IPOPHL completes the first LAV IP seminar for elevating IP commercialization skills
May 22, 2025
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) recognized 21 professionals from government, academe and the private sector for completing its Licensing, Audit, Valuation, and Management of Intellectual Property Rights (LAV IP) Seminar.
Under IPOPHL’s Documentation, Information and Technology Transfer Bureau (DITTB), the four-day program was held to sharpen participants’ skills in managing and valuing IP and intangible assets.
Victoria Malaya, a professor at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University and director of its Innovation and Technology Commercialization Office, said the seminar provided strategies to transform IP into valuable assets.
“The IPOPHL training on licensing, audit, valuation and IP management was extremely informative and practical, offering best practices in navigating the complexities of IP rights management in the Philippines. Kudos to IPOPHL, FLY High KITES 2030!” she added, noting that successful commercialization could boost the university’s global standing and ranking among state universities.
Glacelle Alynne Malinao, Senior Agriculturist at the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), said the program supports their agency’s role in overseeing IP applications within the Department of Agriculture (DA).
“The knowledge I gained from this seminar would also help us identify the best modes of commercialization and improve the DA’s latest IP guidelines,” she added, citing the guidelines, crafted with the assistance of the DITTB and implemented in 2023. The policy signifies a shift even in the public sector to unlock benefits from intangible assets.
From the private sector, Ferdinand H. Aguila, Jr., Vice-President for Corporate Planning at Aguila Auto Glass, shared that as a 73-year-old brand, the company takes IP “very seriously” to safeguard their trusted name and hard-earned reputation.
“We’re going to run a whole audit on all the IP that we should be protecting, to see what registered assets we have and if there are other parties infringing on our legally registered trademarks. We produce a diverse array of creative assets, from marketing materials to other brand collaterals. We’ve come to realize that those types of elements should be protected as well,” he said.
The second LAV IP seminar will run between July to September 2025. # # # (Janina Lim Information Officer III)
