IPOPHL: True to Its Commitment to Serve

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has never wavered in its commitment to serve and continue its business as usual specifically in the province of Leyte even in the midst of destruction that the super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) brought about.

As part of its Business Continuity Program, two weeks after the super typhoon, the IPOPHL sent a team to re-open its IP Satellite Office (IPSO) in Palo, Leyte. Using a make-shift office, the IPOPHL has continued to offer full patent, trademark, and copyright services. Besides the provision of IP services, public service has also been extended by making available two computers with internet connection for the public to use freely to communicate with their loved ones.

On January 8, 2014, another team, headed by the IPOPHL Director General, Atty. Ricardo R. Blancaflor and Deputy Director General Allan B. Gepty, visited some areas in Leyte. This time, the team distributed school bags/backpacks to two schools badly hit by the typhoon: San Jose National High School and the Fisherman’s Village Elementary School in Tacloban City. The backpacks/bags were seized items that have been supposedly included for destruction but which the members of the National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights (NCIPR) have decided to give out to the Yolanda victims as part of the relief efforts of the NCIPR.

The team, while in Tacloban, also purposely met with the IP owners, whose IP Certificates have been issued in the wake of the super typhoon. As it was difficult for these owners to get to the IPOPHL to claim their Certificates, the IPOPHL took the initiative to deliver to them personally their Certificates. None other than the IPOPHL Director General, Atty. Ricardo Blancaflor, awarded the Certificates of Trademark Registration  to the Northwestern Samar State University as represented by Dr. Lorna Deveyra for the School Seal logo and to Elke Sharon Camenforte as represented by Mr. Ariel Angus for the Elke’s Breadhouse logo. A Copyright Certificate was also awarded to Dr. Ramil Perez for his work: Saklang Mananggiti.

Indeed, the IPOPHL is not only committed to increase the level of appreciation of, respect for, and utilization of intellectual property for national development but is also committed to its calling to serve the Filipino people.
