IPOPHL and WIPO Join Hands to Promote ADR

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will conduct an advanced course in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) entitled “Workshop: Mediation of Intellectual Property Disputes”. IPOPHL is the lead Philippine government agency in IP while the WIPO is a United Nations agency based in Geneve, Switzerland in charge of the development and promotion of IP.

To be held on 7-8 May 2014 at the IPOPHL Multi-Purpose Hall, IP Center, 28 Upper McKinley Road, McKinley Hill Town Center, McKinley Hill, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, the event is part of the joint efforts of the IPOPHL and the WIPO to increase the public’s awareness and use of ADR in resolving IP disputes. Major areas of collaboration in ADR include education, skills and competencies development, information dissemination, and other capacity building and institutional arrangements to promote the Philippines as ADR hub in the ASEAN.

The partnership with WIPO highlights another milestone for the IPOPHL in the area of IP adjudication. It is the only IP office in Asia which has multi-door solution for IPR violation and disputes, namely enforcement, adjudication, mediation and arbitration. Managed by the IPOPHL’s Bureau of Legal Affairs, the ADR services is an innovation and game changer, a success story, in line with the agency’s strategic goal of speedy, quality and effective remedy in resolving IP disputes. Since the implementation of the redesigned ADR system in 2011, parties in 619 IP cases submitted themselves to mediation. As of 15 April of this year, 253 of these case resulted in settlements and compromise agreements, a success rate of 41%. Mediation gives opportunities to litigants to obtain “win-win” and cost-effective solution to their disputes.
