IP Philippines rolls out activities for
intellectual property rights celebration

5 October 2007, Makati City – The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines) launches today a series of activities for the month to celebrate the intellectual property rights (IPR) week slated on October 22 to 26. With the theme “Great Idea! Intellectual Property Rights Week Celebrates Creativity”, the month-long calendar of events includes the Open House series of the office, activities that are open to the public such as IPR seminars, art competition, exhibitions, and storytelling sessions; international seminars on patent; training programs under the Intellectual Property Rights Protection (IPROTECT) Training and other activities.

“Most of our programs for this year’s IPR celebration involve the youth. This is part of IP Philippines’ program to intensify public information and education campaign on the importance of IPR in promoting creativity, innovation and competitiveness, and educate our people, particularly this sector of society,” Atty. Adrian S. Cristobal, Jr., Director General of IP Philippines, said. “These young people are our future scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs and artists, the future IP generators,” he added.

“Presidential Proclamation 79 (1992), which declared the last week of October as the IPR week, acknowledges the dominant role technology plays in influencing international economies and trades. IP Philippines celebrates the contributions of our scientists, inventors, trademark owners, and artists in this arena. Through the month-long calendar of events to mark the IPR Week, we underscore the importance of their creations in our daily lives,” Cristobal continued.

The Patent Helpdesk, an Open House series designed to assist scientists and inventors, has two patent examiners on hand to answer queries on intellectual property rights and patent granting procedure. The examiners will provide technical assistance in filing patent applications. The helpdesk lounge, located at the ground floor of the office, is open from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Another Open House series designed for scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs and artists is HANDS-ON-IP scheduled every Friday of the month at 1:00 p.m. Participants can attend a free basic orientation seminar with IP volunteer lawyers and trademark and patent examiners on hand to provide free legal and technical assistance. On October 5, the seminar will focus on trademark and; October 19 is for copyright. On October 26, HANDS-ON-IP will be on patent for utility models and industrial designs in the morning session and patent forinventions in the afternoon session.

More than 50 students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) recently attended the seminar and toured the office under TREK IP, a basic orientation seminar for high school and college students. Other schools scheduled in TREK IP are the Philippine Science High School on October 10, Makati Science High School on October 17, and Manila Science High School on October 24.

IP Philippines in partnership with Levi Strauss Philippines, Inc., on its second year, will hold the “Art in Denim” contest for elementary, high school and college students at the Market! Market! Activity Center on October 7. The competition, which aims to instill awareness and respect for intellectual property rights among the youth, will have 6 Cycle Mind, Pedicab and Duster as guest performers.

Kulay at Salaysay will feature the exhibition of members of the Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (InK) from October 12 to November 16, 2007 , and the storytelling sessions at the Alab Art Space of IP Philippines. The exhibition, scheduled to be launched on October 11, will showcase the illustrations of Ang InK members published by Adarna House. On the other hand, the Adarna House free storytelling sessions open to children aged nine and 12 years old will be held on October 13 and 20 in the morning and afternoon. whizIP, an exhibition of young inventors at the Innovation Area from October 23 to November 23, 2007, will be launched on October 22.

During the IPR week, two international patent seminars will take place, organized and participated in by the office. IP Philippines and the European Patent Office (EPO) will hold the patent search and examination seminar on October 22 to 26 with the theme, “Regional Workshop on Search and Examination in the field of Nanotechnology – Electronics and Chemistry”.

Director General Cristobal will provide the opening address to the seminar of the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and Intellectual Property Alumni Association (IPAA) entitled “The Use of Patents for National Development” in Dusit Hotel Nikko, Makati City on October 24 to 25, 2007 .

IP Philippines and the Philippine Science Journalists Association, Inc. (PSciJourn) will hold an IPR Forum for media practitioners and industry representatives on October 25 at the Phivolcs Auditorium, CP Garcia Avenue in the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

The Intellectual Property Rights Protection Training (IPROTECT) program of the National Committee for Intellectual Property Rights (NCIPR) will hold two training seminars on enforcement in partnership with Levi Strauss Philippines, Inc. on October 9 and Microsoft Philippines, Inc. on October 25. Since 2005, IPROTECT has provided eight seminars to 153 law enforcers and other government officials.

The Copyright Support Services Unit of IP Philippines will provide basic copyright seminars to the Performers’ Rights Society of the Philippines on October 8 and visual artists at the End Frame Video Art Festival on October 13.

On October 26, thePhilippineCharitySweepstakes Office (PCSO) and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) present Kilig sa Orig at Teatrino in The Promenade, Greenhills, San Juan . The concert, featuring John Lesaca, Mitch Valdes, Richard Merk, Paolo Santos and other artists, will start at 7:30 p.m. with ticket priced at P500.
