The speed of the innovation process is spurred by the presence of an enabling environment and support mechanisms. Such an environment is founded on sound legal and regulatory frameworks that ensure respect for creators’ intellectual property rights (IPR) and incentives for continuous innovation. The creation of such is the mandate of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and its member states, which lead in the celebration of the 8th World Intellectual Property Day. “For the innovation process to occur, our creators must be empowered to transform their ideas into tangible products such as inventions, works of art, or goods that drive economic growth,” said Atty. Adrian S. Cristobal, Jr., Director General of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines). “There is no dearth of ideas, and this is why IP Philippines, along with other WIPO member states, continues to foster an environment conducive to bridging idea generation and creation. The annual celebration of World IP Day is an example of our efforts to promote innovation and creativity, as it aims to increase our understanding of the role of IPR protection in the process of creation,” Cristobal added. Most people are familiar with IP and its protection through the registration of patent, trademark, and copyright. However, quite a significant number fail to grasp the relevance of these in their daily lives. This is one of the reasons why WIPO member states determined in 2000 to hold the annual celebration of World IP Day on April 26 – the day when the Convention establishing WIPO originally entered into force in 1970. The celebration of World IP Day in the Philippines is geared toward helping the average Filipino to understand the relationship between intellectual property and current issues affecting his life and the world in general. “This year’s theme, ‘Innovation', is fitting as it pertains to the creation of new products and services with a competitive edge,” said Cristobal. “It has often been said how the innovative nation can stake a claim in the New Economy, one driven chiefly by knowledge and its management. IP is a strategic asset for economic development and wealth creation.” Indeed, World IP Day celebrates not only people’s innate creativity, but also the contributions made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe. It encourages respect for the intellectual property rights of others, the very force behind the creation of products that drive economic, cultural, and social development.
