IP Philippines reports five most raided areas;
rise in enforcement ops in 2007

(IP Philippines), the lead coordinator of inter-agency efforts against piracy and counterfeiting, disclosed today five areas frequently raided in 2007 for selling counterfeit items.

Reports gathered by IP Philippines from the Intellectual Property Rights Division of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Anti-Fraud and Commercial Crimes Division of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Optical Media Board (OMB) listed in descending order Binondo, Greenhills, Makati Cinema Square, Quiapo and Metrowalk as ‘notorious’ places. In 2007, the three enforcement groups conducted raids in a total of 573 areas, 169 percent higher than the 213 areas recorded in 2006, and up by 71 percent compared to the 335 areas in 2005.
 
Most of the mentioned spots consistently made it to the ‘notorious’ list according to the enforcement reports in 2005 and 2006. Binondo, Quiapo, Makati Cinema Square and Greenhills were in the 2005 list. Binondo, Metrowalk, Greenhills, Quiapo and the 168 Mall figured in the 2006 records.      

“Apart from the increase in the number of areas raided, other enforcement figures likewise improved in 2007. Foremost is the total estimated value of confiscated goods that reached P2.92 billion. This is a 116 percent hike from the 2006 figure of P1.35 billion, and a 154 percent increase based on the 2005 total of 1.15 billion,” Atty. Adrian S. Cristobal, Jr., Director General of IP Philippines, said.
