We are pleased to announce that the Japan Patent Office (JPO) through the Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS)-Manila has offered the following courses on Intellectual Property Rights as part of their human resource development activities for fiscal 2008.

JPO/IPR Training Program for 2008
A. JPO/IPR Training Course for Lawyers
Period of Course
July 2 – July 23, 2008
[Application Deadline: May 7, 2008]
Objective:
To deepen understanding of IP Rights and to enhance professional ability through comparisons of each country’s legislative systems, methods of determining infringement on Industrial Property Rights (i.e., interpreting technical ranges applicable to Patent Invention) and IPR infringement lawsuit cases.
Target Participants (must meet all of the following 3 requirements):
(1) Target participants must be one of the following:
a) Judges and/or prosecutors
b) Patent attorneys and/or IP lawyer
c) Corporate employees engaged as liaisons for legal affairs dealing with such issues as license agreements and infringement of rights.
(2) Target participants should have considerable knowledge of the IPR system, as
well as a desire to acquire knowledge about measures for counterfeits.
(3) Target participants should be between 27 and 50 years of age with more
than 3 years of experience in IPR related laws.
B. JPO/IPR Training Course for Advanced IP Practitioners
Period of Course:
July 16 - August 6, 2008

Objective:
To deepen comprehensive understanding of IPR-related business and enhance professional ability through lectures and discussions on management of IPR in Enterprises, IPR law, patent applications and trademark applications.
Target Participants (must meet all of the following 3 requirements):
(1) Target participants must be one of the following:
- IP practitioners in private businesses; Employees at corporations involved in planning patent encouragement activities and programs, educating company staff, liaisons for legal affairs relating to licensing, handling patent infringement, patent applications, or investigating prior-art.
- Patent attorneys, IP lawyers, and employees at patent/law offices involved in liaisons for legal affairs relating to licensing, handling patent infringement and patent applications, or investigating prior-art.
- IP Instructors working at IP Promotional organizations
(2) Target participants should have considerable knowledge of IPR system as well as a desire to acquire knowledge about IPR-related business.
(3) Target participants should be between 27 and 50 years of age, with more than 3 years of experience in IPR-related work with private businesses, patent/law offices, or IP promotional organizations.
C. JPO/IPR Training Course for IP Trainers
Period of Course and Number of Candidates:
August 27 – September 17, 2008

Objective:
To enhance knowledge required to disseminate intellectual property (e.g. legal systems, international treaties and methods of using patent information) and to deepen understanding of how to disseminate intellectual property (e.g. textbooks and implementation program) as well as to learn about how to efficiently/effectively disseminate intellectual property through presentations and opinion exchanges with other trainees.
Target Participants (must meet all of the following 3 requirements):
(1) Target participants must be one of the following:
- Employees at universities or research institutions involved in education on the Intellectual Property system
- Those engaged in the dissemination of the IPR in IP promotional Organization
(2) Target participants should have considerable knowledge of the IPR
system as well as a desire to acquire knowledge about dissemination
of IPR.
(3) Target participants should be between 27 and 50 years of age, with more than 3 years of experience in work related to the education or dissemination of the IPR system in universities, research institutions or IP promotional organizations.
D. JPO/IPR Training Course for Patent Experts
Period of Course:
November 10-28, 2008
[Application Deadline: August 29, 2008]
Objective:
To enhance knowledge on matters relating to Intellectual Property as a whole as well as to deepen understanding and to enhance professional ability in regard to patents through lectures and discussions on synopses of the patent system, drawing up specifications and illustrations, handling office actions, carrying out revisions, judging patentability, considerations of patents for cutting-edge technology and using patent information.
Target Participants (must meet all of the following 3 requirements):
(1) Target participants must be one of the following:
- Patent practitioners in private businesses
- Patent attorneys and IP lawyers
- Persons engaged in patent work at IP Promotional organizations.
(2) Target participants should have considerable knowledge of the IPR
system as well as a desire to acquire more advanced and detailed
knowledge about patent-related work.
(3) Target participants should be between 27 and 50 years of age, with more than 3 years of actual work experience in drafting specifications for patent applications for private businesses or patent/law offices.
